Mongla, Mar 6 (V7N) - At least nine people were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by opponents of the BNP in Rampal, Bagerhat, amid tensions over political dominance. Seven of the injured have been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital, while two others are receiving treatment at a local hospital. Among them, Shahidul, currently at Khulna Medical College Hospital, is in critical condition.
According to Rampal Upazila BNP Member Secretary Kazi Jahidul Islam, BNP committees are currently being formed across the region. Recently, BNP committees were established in three unions of Rampal Upazila, comprising only "genuine party members." However, supporters of Rampal Upazila BNP Convener Hafizur Rahman Tuhin were left out. Jahidul claimed that Tuhin had been working with Awami League allies since August 5, which alienated party loyalists. As a result, his supporters were excluded from the new BNP committees.
Jahidul alleged that, in retaliation, Tuhin and his followers—supported by BNP and Awami League allies—launched an attack on his supporters between Thursday morning and noon. Nine BNP activists loyal to Jahidul, including Shahidul, Ajmal, Alamin, Babu, Saidul, Mahid, Aham, Ashraf, and Kalam, were injured. While Ashraf and Kalam are being treated at Rampal Upazila Health Complex, the remaining victims are at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Shahidul’s condition remains critical, according to his family.
Additionally, Jahidul’s camp accused Tuhin’s group of vandalizing the houses of Mahid and Mohammad, as well as properties in the Akor Gher area. Shops owned by Aham and Arif Billah were also reportedly damaged.
However, Hafizur Rahman Tuhin denied any involvement, stating, "I have no knowledge of these incidents."
Rampal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Selim Reza confirmed that no formal complaints have been filed yet. "If a complaint is received, necessary legal action will be taken," he added.
