Rajshahi, Mar 08 (V7N) - Residents of Tikapara, Rajshahi, have formed a human chain demanding an end to the destruction of pond fish and the protection of local water bodies. The demonstration took place on Friday (March 7) at 4 pm near the Tikapara Bou Bazar intersection. The event was organized by Youth Action for Social Change (YAS) and local residents.
Local resident Iftekhar Rubel emphasized the importance of the Tikapara pond, stating, "This is the only pond within a 1.5 km radius, and it plays a vital role in the community. During a recent fire, water from this pond was used to extinguish the flames. It must be protected, and those attempting to fill it must face legal action."
YAS President Shamiul Alim Shawon pointed out that the illegal filling of Dedarse Pond in Rajshahi continues despite a High Court ban. He called for the urgent preservation of this pond and the restoration of 952 ponds in the city, following the High Court’s directives.
YAS General Secretary Atiqur Rahman Atiq added, "No more ponds in Rajshahi will be allowed to be destroyed. A fair investigation must be conducted, and the maximum punishment must be ensured for those responsible. The government should take steps to preserve and acquire private ponds if necessary."
The demonstrators stressed that without this pond, residents of Sagarpara, Khulipara, Mahaldarpara, Tikapara, and Machuapara would lose a critical water resource. They urged authorities to take immediate action to protect the pond and enforce environmental laws.
