Rajshahi, Mar 09 (V7N)– Students of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway on Sunday, March 9, 2025, demanding the death penalty for rapists in response to the rising incidents of sexual violence across Bangladesh. At around 11:30 AM, students from various halls and academic buildings staged a protest march, halting traffic and diverting heavy vehicles through the Kharkhari Bypass.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “Hang the rapists!” and “We want justice!” expressing their outrage over the lack of accountability for perpetrators of sexual violence. Sadia Afrin, a student from the Accounting and Information Management department, criticized the government and law enforcement for failing to deliver justice in previous rape cases. She emphasized the psychological trauma faced by survivors, urging that if the government cannot punish rapists, they should be handed over to the people for justice.
The demonstration is part of a broader movement among students across various universities in Bangladesh, demanding swift action against sexual violence. Students vowed to continue their protests until their demands for exemplary punishment for rapists are met. The protests reflect growing frustration and urgency among young people regarding safety and justice in their communities.
