Rangamati, May 6 (V7N): Leaders of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir have called on local authorities to take stronger and more proactive measures against the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking in Rangamati. The call came during an anti-drug human chain organized by the city branch of Islami Chhatra Shibir on Monday afternoon in front of the Reserve Bazaar Jame Masjid.
The event, moderated by Jalal Uddin, General Secretary of Shibir’s Rangamati city unit, featured Shahidul Islam Safi, President of the Rangamati District Shibir, as the chief guest. Other speakers included District Finance Secretary Md. Irfanul Haque, District Secretary Md. Robiul Islam, former district presidents Morshedul Alam and Abdus Salam, among other local leaders.
In their speeches, Shibir leaders expressed grave concern over the increasing prevalence of drug use and smuggling in the hill district. They alleged that youth across the country, especially in remote regions like Rangamati, are falling victim to the dark grip of narcotics, pushing an entire generation towards ruin.
Speakers criticized the perceived inaction of local law enforcement, claiming that many drug trafficking networks continue to operate with impunity—often under the protection of influential political figures. They urged all segments of society, including other student and youth organizations, to unite in a collective resistance against drug abuse and to safeguard the future of the younger generation.
Following the hour-long human chain, Shibir activists organized a protest march that began from the same venue, paraded through the Reserve Bazaar intersection, and concluded in front of the Paharika bus terminal.
The demonstration highlighted the organization’s demand for immediate administrative action and broader societal awareness to combat what they described as a looming crisis in the region.
