Rangamati, May 10 (V7N) - Ali Imam Majumder, the Honorable Advisor in charge of the Ministry of Food and Land, stated in Rangamati today that Bangladesh is currently self-sufficient in food.

Speaking to media personnel after a meeting on food storage and distribution in Rangamati district, Advisor Majumder said that while there were concerns about food self-sufficiency before the interim government assumed power, the country now produces enough rice to meet its estimated 3 million ton requirement. He affirmed that there are sufficient food stocks currently available in Bangladesh.

He noted a shift in dietary habits, with many Bangladeshis now consuming wheat flour bread in the morning instead of rice. However, he pointed out that Bangladesh's wheat production is only 1 million metric tons, necessitating the import of the remaining 6 million tons.

Advisor Majumder highlighted the robust rice harvest in the northern regions, including Rajshahi and Brahmanbaria, as well as parts of Chittagong, expressing optimism about future food security. He also emphasized the extensive measures implemented by the interim government to preserve food.

The meeting, held at the conference room of the Rest House Bidyut Bhaban in Kaptai Upazila, Rangamati, brought together Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Habib Ullah (Maruf), retired Additional Secretary Sofi-ul Alam (former Upazila Executive Officer of Kaptai Upazila), Rangamati District Police Superintendent Dr. SM Farhad Hossain, Kaptai Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ruhul Amin, Manager of Kaptai Hydropower Generation Center Mahmud Hasan, and Rangamati District Food Controller Sugati Chakma. The meeting was presided over by Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Habib Ullah (Maruf).
