Jhalakathi May 13 (V7N) - Thirty registered fishermen in Rajapur, Jhalakathi, today received Bakna calves as part of an alternative employment initiative. This support is being provided under the "Conservation and Development of Indigenous Species of Fish and Snails" project for the fiscal year 2024-25.

The Bakna calf distribution ceremony took place at the Rajapur Upazila Parishad premises on Tuesday (May 13) at 11 am. Each fisherman was provided with a calf to enable them to supplement their income through cattle rearing alongside their fishing activities.

Rajapur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rahul Chandra graced the event as the chief guest. He emphasized the government's objective, stating, "The government’s goal is to improve the quality of life of fishermen and create alternative income opportunities. They can build a sustainable livelihood by raising livestock instead of relying solely on fishing."

Upazila Livestock Officer Md. Abdullah was present as a special guest. He assured the fishermen of support, saying, "Our department will provide necessary veterinary services and advice in the field of livestock farming. We want the fishermen to use this assistance properly and improve their quality of life."

Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Gautam Mondal also attended the event. He highlighted the broader aim of the project, stating, “The main objective of the indigenous fish and snail conservation project is not only to protect natural resources, but also to ensure the financial security of those who depend on these resources, such as fishermen.”

The fishermen expressed their happiness at receiving the Bakna calves, anticipating that the mature cows will provide opportunities to increase their income through milk sales and breeding, opening new possibilities for their families. Local residents welcomed this government initiative and expressed hope for the expansion of such activities to include other professionals in the future.
