TANGAIL, MAY 26 (V7N) – Police have arrested three members of a robbery gang in connection with a recent incident of robbery and molestation on a moving bus along the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway. Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Mizanur Rahman announced the arrests at a press conference at his office on Monday afternoon.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sabbir (34), son of Sanwar Hossain of Rahimpur village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila; Sihab Sarkar (27), son of Abdul Hamid Sarkar; and Jahangir Alam (37), son of the late Iman Ali Sheikh. From their possession, authorities recovered cash, gold ornaments, and 19 mobile phones looted from the passengers. Police stated that all three have multiple cases filed against them in various police stations.

SP Md. Mizanur Rahman reported that the Tangail District Detective Branch apprehended the three suspects in Sirajganj on Thursday night. The incident in question occurred on Tuesday (May 20), when a passenger bus of Al Imran Paribahan departed Abdullahpur in Dhaka for Rangpur at approximately 8 PM. Along the route, additional passengers boarded from Narsinghpur, Baipail, and Ashulia in Savar. The bus, carrying 38 passengers including about 10 women, crossed Elenga in Kalihati Upazila of Tangail around 11:30 PM.

After traveling a few kilometers on the connecting road to the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge, a group of 8 to 10 robbers, outnumbering the passengers, reportedly seized control of the bus from the driver using knives, chapatis, and other locally made weapons. During the ordeal, they systematically searched each passenger, looting mobile phones, cash, gold, and other valuables. The robbers then drove the bus towards Chandra-Ashulia in Savar, and subsequently circled the area, moving between Savar and Tangail repeatedly throughout the night.

The SP added that the arrested individuals have been sent to court with a seven-day remand application. He assured that operations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang.
