Cox’s Bazar, Sept 28 (V7N) – Fishermen near Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf caught a rare 18-kilogram black pomfret fish on Sunday morning, sparking excitement among locals. The catch was later sold to local fish traders for Tk 95,000.
According to locals, the fish was netted by a trawler owned by fisherman Monaf. He said, “When my crew cast their nets in the sea, they pulled up several fish along with a large black pomfret. After weighing it, we found it was 18 kilograms. We later sold it at the local market for Tk 95,000.”
The unusual catch created significant enthusiasm among local fishermen, as black pomfret is typically found in deep sea waters and such a large specimen is rarely seen in the area.
Teknaf Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md. Delwar Hossain confirmed the incident, stating, “Black pomfret is a high-value marine fish, very delicious to eat, and in great demand in the market. When fishermen catch such large and valuable fish, they earn considerable profit, which is also positive for the fisheries sector.”
In recent weeks, fishermen in areas around the Bay of Bengal near Saint Martin’s Island have reported an increasing number of large fish being caught, giving fresh hope and motivation to the local fishing community.
