Khagrachhari, Sept 28 (V7N) – At least three people were killed and several others injured in a shooting incident in Guimara Upazila, Khagrachhari, on Sunday amid ongoing protests over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl. The victims’ bodies have been sent to Khagrachhari District Hospital for postmortem examination, while four critically injured individuals are receiving treatment.

Chittagong Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Ahsan Habib Palash confirmed the fatalities, noting that the exact identities of the deceased are still being verified. Khagrachhari Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Saber stated that the bodies arrived at the hospital between 5:30 and 6:00 pm and have been kept in cold storage pending autopsy on Monday to determine the cause of death.

District Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khondkar said police and hospital authorities are jointly working to verify details before releasing official information.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement reporting that three hill residents were killed in an attack by miscreants. The incident also left 13 soldiers, including a major, three police officers including the OC of Guimara Police Station, and several others injured. The ministry expressed deep regret and called for a swift investigation and legal action against the perpetrators, urging the public to maintain calm.

The violence erupted during ongoing protests by the “Jummo-Student Janata” movement, which has blocked roads connecting Chittagong-Khagrachhari, Khagrachhari-Rangamati, and Khagrachhari-Sajek since early Saturday. During the unrest, fire was set at Ramesu Bazar in Guimara, damaging several nearby homes and shops. Witnesses reported that 20–25 masked individuals looted the market and set multiple motorcycles and houses on fire.

According to the protest organizers, clashes intensified around noon between law enforcement and locals, during which small arms were reportedly fired, resulting in six to seven serious injuries.
