Teknaf, Nov 28 (V7N) — Fishermen off the Baharchhara coast of Teknaf hauled in a rare giant croaker weighing 166 kilograms after it became trapped in their nets in the Bay of Bengal. The massive fish was sold for Tk 180,000 shortly after it was brought ashore on Thursday afternoon.

According to the fishermen, the fish was caught during a routine fishing trip when it suddenly became entangled in their nets. Due to its sheer size, lifting it onto the boat proved extremely difficult. Saifullah, owner of the fishing boat, said the crew struggled for several minutes to secure the catch. Fisherman Saiful Islam added that he had never seen such a large croaker in his life.

Although the initial asking price was Tk 200,000, local fish trader Karim Soudagar purchased the fish for Tk 180,000. The sale was finalized at Lama Bazar’s wholesale fish depot. Karim Soudagar said arrangements were underway to transport the fish to Dhaka.

Local fishermen noted that such a large croaker has not been caught in the area for many years, sparking excitement and curiosity among residents.

Teknaf Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Delwar Hossain confirmed reports of the rare catch. He said responsible fishing practices and compliance with seasonal bans have allowed fish populations to grow larger. He added that such exceptional catches bring joy to communities and provide fishermen with better earnings.
