Madaripur, Dec 04 (V7N) - Tension and widespread criticism have surfaced across Shibchar Upazila under Madaripur-1 constituency after Advocate Md Abdul Hamid Howlader, a politically controversial figure, collected nomination papers from the National Citizens' Party (NCP). His move has drawn sharp reactions from local leaders, who accuse him of being a long-time beneficiary of both the Awami League and BNP governments.
Multiple sources confirmed that Howlader, despite being an influential member of the ruling Awami League, concealed his party identity while seeking NCP’s nomination. Local NCP leaders and grassroots activists expressed frustration, questioning how a figure accused of shifting political loyalties could pursue nomination without consulting district or upazila-level party structures.
The development has triggered intense debate in Shibchar, with many describing Howlader as a “political opportunist” and criticizing NCP’s top leadership for issuing nomination papers without evaluating local sentiment. Leaders from various political backgrounds in the constituency have warned against allowing "opportunistic and controversial" politicians to enter their political platforms.
According to records and local accounts, Advocate Abdul Hamid Howlader previously served as general secretary of the now-banned Chhatra League Shibchar unit. He later held the post of legal affairs secretary in the Awami League’s Madaripur district committee before switching to the BNP. After a period with BNP, he returned to the Awami League and currently serves as an executive member of the party’s Shibchar Upazila unit.
Speaking to reporters, Howlader defended his political decision, saying he intends to contest the election “for the people and the betterment of the country.” He said many within the constituency urged him to run as a candidate.
He added that he expects NCP to nominate him after conducting their assessment, expressing confidence that he would win if selected.
