Madaripur, Dec 09 (V7N) – A shocking and unusual incident occurred in Madaripur town, where the remains of a mother were exhumed from her grave 16 years after her burial. The act has been linked to a land dispute with her younger son, Mukul Khan, and has sparked outrage among local residents and family members alike.

The incident took place late at night on December 7, but came to public attention on Monday morning, causing widespread concern and anger in the community.

The deceased, Sufia Begum, was known as a pious and modest woman. During her lifetime, she requested her children to bury her in the courtyard of their home. Her family respected her wishes, and she was interred in a corner of their property, where her grave had been carefully maintained for the past 16 years by her elder son, Tutul Khan, and other family members.

According to family sources, Tutul had purchased a piece of land nearly 20 years ago with his own earnings and included Mukul’s name in the deed to avoid any disputes. The land was later divided equally among the siblings in the presence of respected local figures, coincidentally placing Sufia Begum’s grave within Mukul’s share. At the time, Mukul assured the family that he had no objection to the grave remaining on his portion of the land.

Over time, the family claims, Mukul developed a gambling and substance addiction and allegedly plotted to remove the grave to claim the land for himself. On the early morning of December 7, Mukul reportedly hired individuals to dig up the grave, removed the remains, and reburied them in a mass burial site in the municipal Mill Field area without following Islamic burial practices.

The revelation of the incident caused deep grief among Sufia Begum’s other children and relatives. Speaking from abroad via phone, elder son Tutul Khan said, “If my brother needed land or money, he could have asked me. I would have paid four times the value of the grave space. But to remove our mother’s remains after 16 years—this is unacceptable.”

He added that he had no objections to sharing the land he had purchased, but the secret exhumation constitutes a serious crime that no child should commit.

Family members and local residents have highlighted that Islamic law prescribes strict regulations for exhuming and relocating graves, none of which were followed in this case. They described the nighttime removal of the mother’s remains as inhumane and illegal.

The community and the affected family have demanded that the authorities take strict legal action against Mukul Khan and those involved, and that Sufia Begum’s remains be returned and properly reburied in her original grave.

Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Hossain confirmed that an investigation has been launched based on the complaint and legal measures will be taken accordingly.
