Chattogram, Dec 20 (V7N) — A group of agitated youths set fire to the residence of former Education Minister and Awami League leader Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel in Chattogram late Thursday night in protest over the killing of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The incident occurred after a march organized under the banner of student activists started from the No. 2 Gate area of Chattogram city and reached Nowfel’s residence in Chasma Hill around 11:00 PM.
The protesters first set fire to a motorcycle and furniture outside the house before entering the premises to vandalize and set further fires. Fire service personnel attempted to reach the scene but were unable to access the residence due to the large crowd.
Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel is the elder son of former Chattogram City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and former Chattogram Metropolitan Awami League president. This residence has been previously targeted in arson attacks. It is located approximately one kilometer from Sholochhar No. 2 Gali to Mayor Gali.
By Friday morning, the charred remains of the motorcycle and burnt furniture were visible in front of the house, drawing curious onlookers. Eyewitnesses reported that after news of Hadi’s death spread, student groups called for a gathering at Sholochhar No. 2 Gali, which quickly drew a large number of young participants. The group then marched to Nowfel’s residence, setting fire to property along the way, causing panic among local residents.
Attempts to contact OC Jasim Uddin of Bayezid Police Station were unsuccessful. Fire Service officials in the Chattogram divisional central room confirmed that although they rushed to the scene, they could not reach the residence due to the dense crowd.
This incident highlights rising tensions and unrest following the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, reflecting widespread public outrage and mobilization among youth and student groups in Chattogram .
