Rajbari, Dec 24 (V7N)- Ferry services on the country’s vital Daulatdia–Paturia waterway have been suspended due to dense fog to prevent potential accidents.

According to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), ferry movement was halted from 5:45 am on Wednesday as heavy fog enveloped the Padma River basin, severely reducing visibility. The fog made channel beacon lights and navigation marking points unclear, posing serious risks to vessel movement.

As a result of the suspension, drivers and passengers waiting on both riverbanks are facing difficulties, particularly due to the severe cold weather.

Assistant Manager of the BIWTC Daulatdia Ghat Branch, Noor Ahmed, said that ferry services were stopped at 5:50 am as a precautionary measure.

“Ferry operations will resume as soon as the fog density decreases and visibility improves,” he said.

He added that although ferry services remain suspended, there is no long queue of vehicles at the ghats at present. Currently, 10 small and large ferries are stationed at the terminals, ready to resume operations once conditions become favorable.

The Daulatdia–Paturia route is one of the country’s busiest waterways, and ferry services on this route are often temporarily suspended during winter due to fog-related visibility issues.
