Rajshahi, Feb 05 (V7N) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday said politics in Bangladesh should no longer follow the tradition where “the king’s son becomes king,” stressing that leadership must be determined by merit, ability and proven patriotism.

He made the remarks while addressing an election rally of the 11-party electoral alliance at the historic Madrasa ground in Rajshahi in the afternoon as the chief guest.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the country would not return to politics based on hegemony or family inheritance. Instead, he emphasized that future politics must uphold national dignity and equality, both domestically and in foreign relations. “We want good relations with all countries, including our neighbours, but those relations must be based on equality and self-respect,” he said, adding that Bangladesh does not seek dishonourable dependence on any nation.

He said Jamaat-e-Islami envisions a Bangladesh built by embracing people of all religions and communities. “Bangladesh belongs to everyone — Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, men, women and ethnic communities. We will not allow this nation to be divided again,” he said.

The Jamaat Ameer claimed that governance based on Islamic principles would ensure justice for all and would not oppress any group. He pledged that if his alliance is given the mandate through votes and public support, corruption and extortion would not be tolerated.

During his speech, he also promised development initiatives for Rajshahi, including gas supply expansion, revival of sugar mills and the establishment of a dental college.

The rally marked one of the largest election gatherings in Rajshahi in recent years, with a significant turnout of both men and women filling the Madrasa ground by noon. Earlier in the day, Dr Shafiqur Rahman addressed election rallies in Godagari, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon.
