Chittagong, Feb 07 (V7N)- The Chittagong Port Protection Movement Council has announced an indefinite strike starting tomorrow, February 8, over four key demands, including the cancellation of the ongoing process to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chittagong Port to the Dubai-based company DP World.

The decision was announced at a press conference held at the Chittagong Press Club on Saturday (February 7) afternoon.

Apart from halting the lease process, the council’s demands include:

  • The withdrawal of the Chittagong Port chairman

  • Reinstatement of protesting workers and employee leaders who were subject to disciplinary action

  • Immediate cessation of harassment or filing of cases against port leaders

Leaders of the council stated that no employees would report to work during the strike. They criticized the government for failing to act despite ample time given to address their concerns.

The council also mentioned that activities at the port’s outer anchorage have continued despite previous movements. However, with no response from authorities, the new strike program will also halt unloading of goods at outer anchorages.

This announcement comes just two days after a previous strike program was suspended following assurances from the shipping advisor that the demands would be considered.
