A crocodile fitted with a satellite transmitter has been recovered from Bagerhat's Chitalmari in Bangladesh.
On Friday (April 12) at 9 pm, the crocodile was recovered from the fishing enclosure of Md. Hasan Sheikh of Dakshin Saildah village of Kalatala Union of the upazila.
The crocodile has been taken by truck to the office of the Divisional Officer (DFO) of the Khulna Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department. Later, the crocodile will be released deep into the Sundarbans, said DFO Nirmal Kumar Pal.
Earlier, the crocodile was staying in Md Hasan Sheikh's fishing enclosure since Thursday (April 11) night.
Locals said, suddenly they saw the crocodile in the fishing area. When the matter became known, the locals thronged to see the crocodile. At one point everyone rescued the crocodile. Alligators have satellite transmitters on their bodies. The crocodile was later taken away by forest department officials. The police were also coming to the spot after receiving the information.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chitalmari Police Station Md Ikram Hossain said that the police were deployed at the spot so that no one harmed the crocodile. We have maintained contact with the forest department since hearing the news. A team led by Khulna Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Officer Tanmoy Acharya took the crocodile to Khulna in a truck.
Divisional Officer (DFO) of the Department of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Nirmal Kumar Pal said, "We have rescued the crocodile." The crocodile is in good health. Later, the crocodile will be released deep into the Sundarbans.
In order to know the movement and trajectory of Sundarban crocodiles through research, four crocodiles were released at Herbaria Point in Sundarbans by installing satellite tags from March 13 to March 16. While 3 out of 4 crocodiles were located in Sundarbans, another crocodile was located in Mongla, Bagerhat, Morelgunj, Pirojpur areas at various times.
Among the 4 released crocodiles, two are male and two are female. Earlier, 200 crocodiles were released from Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center in Sundarbans. But their movements were not observed as such. But earlier in the same way, turtles were released with satellite transmitters implanted in their bodies.
