Severe flooding has submerged 70 villages in Feni's Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas, impacting around 15,000 families. Recent heavy rains and breaches in river embankments have led to widespread inundation, causing significant hardship and disrupting daily life.

Feni, Aug 20 (V7N) - In a recurring crisis, the Feni districts of Parshuram and Fulgazi are experiencing their third bout of flooding in just a month and a half. Recent heavy rains combined with water from upstream in India have breached 17 sections of flood control embankments on the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Sillonia rivers.

This has led to significant hardship for thousands of residents, with floodwaters submerging farmland, roads, and fish ponds. Local roadways are completely inundated, disrupting all forms of transportation. Additionally, several primary and secondary schools in the affected upazilas are submerged under knee-deep water.

The Feni Meteorological Department reported that 186 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the district within the 24 hours leading up to 6 am on Tuesday (August 20).

Local sources indicate that breaches in the embankments of the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Sillonia rivers were first reported on August 2. Recent heavy rains and upstream water from India have exacerbated the situation, causing water to re-enter local areas through these breaches starting Monday afternoon.

This has resulted in widespread flooding in several regions, including the breached sections near West Alkara Masterbari in Parshuram Upazila, South Kautali Kashinagar, and Champaknagar in Mirzanagar Union, near Zahir Chairman's house in South Shalder, South Shalder, as well as in the Teteshwar and Satkuchia areas of the Kahuya river embankment, and the breached sections of the Sillonia river embankment in West Mirzanagar. Roads, homes, croplands, and fish enclosures are all under water, with 70 villages inundated and around 15,000 families stranded and suffering.

Md. Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Feni Water Development Board, noted that breaches occurred in 17 sections of the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Sillonia river embankments on August 2. Before these breaches could be repaired, recent heavy rainfall and upstream water have led to more flooding through these compromised sections.
