Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N): As the floodwaters begin to recede in Cumilla, the relief distribution process in the district is being thrown into disarray due to widespread chaos.

Locals have claimed that government aid funds have been exhausted. Despite receiving significant relief materials from private donors, the lack of organization is severely hampering proper distribution.

During visits to the flood-affected areas, it was reported that individuals from slums and dry highlands are seizing relief items meant for flood victims. The absence of police and army personnel is exacerbating the situation, making it difficult to maintain order.

The flooding, caused by the breach of the Gumti River dam and erosion along the Salda and Ghungur rivers, has left Burichang and Brahmanpara upazilas still submerged. Additionally, many areas in Debidwar upazila remain inundated.

Each day, slum residents block the road connecting Burichang upazila with Cumilla Sadar, obstructing relief vehicles from reaching the affected areas. Even when relief vehicles do get through, the lack of boats prevents the distribution of supplies to those in need.

As a result, donors are often forced to hand over relief items to people who have not been impacted by the floods, such as slum-dwellers and those on higher ground.

Jahirul Haque Babu, a resident of Burichang upazila, remarked, "Some people are missing out on relief, while others are receiving it multiple times. The situation would have been more orderly if there were enough police and army personnel."

Brahmanpara Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Azharul Islam stated, "The government’s aid funds have been depleted. It is difficult for people to reach Brahmanpara via Burichang. I would recommend using the Muradnagar-Companiganj road to access the area."
