Rajshahi, Aug 29 (V7N) - The development of five flyovers in Rajshahi city is currently in doubt. Since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the contractor Denco Limited has disappeared, causing a halt in construction at key locations such as Hadrgram Newpara, Baharampur Intersection to Bond Gate, and Newmarket to Gerhanga Moor. This situation has led to significant inconvenience for local residents.

Reports indicate that theft and looting at the construction sites have left contractors feeling unsafe. The incomplete work and large potholes on the roads have disrupted traffic and created severe problems for commuters. Local businesses are also struggling due to the deteriorating road conditions.

Residents have expressed frustration over the difficulties caused by the large potholes, which have rendered the roads nearly impassable for vehicles and motorcycles. Many view the project as unnecessary, given its high cost.

On-site inspections show that construction activities at Railgate, Bilsimla, Bond Gate, and Baharampur are similarly stalled. Majeed Sons Construction Limited's work sites lack activity, with missing workers and construction materials left unattended while heavy machinery has been removed.

Sources report ongoing theft and looting of construction materials since August 5, with incidents occurring both day and night, making it impossible to stop. There have also been reports of arson and vandalism.

Dr. Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir, Administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation, stated, “We are assessing the situation. Projects that are still operational and serve public interests will be continued if feasible. We have funds available to complete necessary work. We will investigate the project's relevance and corruption issues before deciding on further steps.”

The city corporation has allocated approximately Tk 821 crore for a total of seven flyovers, including the two already completed. The previous government's budget for integrated infrastructure development in the city was Tk 3,000 crore.
