Rajshahi, Aug 29 (V7N) - A human chain was organized in Rajshahi and across the country to protest against false charges filed against journalists. This demonstration took place from 11 AM to 12 PM on Thursday in Kadirganj, Rajshahi. The Rajshahi Union of Journalists (RUJ) arranged the event, demanding the immediate withdrawal of these charges.
The protest was led by RUJ President Rafiqul Islam, with former General Secretary Tanzimul Haque overseeing the proceedings. Key speakers included senior journalist Ahmed Safiuddin, BFUJ Joint Secretary Rashid Ripon, and Executive Member Badarul Hasan Liton, along with RUJ General Secretary Saifur Rahman Rocky, former General Secretaries Shibli Noman and Mamun-or-Rashid, Vice-President Taiyabur Rahman, former President of the Bangladesh Photojournalists Association (Rajshahi branch) Asaduzzaman Asad, senior journalists Sourav Habib and Bulbul Habib, among others.
The speakers condemned the situation, arguing that the progress achieved through the sacrifices of students and the public is now being threatened by a group engaged in looting and attempts to destabilize the country. They accused this group of targeting journalists with false accusations to suppress the truth. The protestors warned that if this continues, the hopes for meaningful change will be undermined.
The participants demanded the immediate withdrawal of charges against Rajshahi journalists Rashid Ripon, Rafiqul Islam, Rozina Sultana, and Asgar Ali Sagar. They also vowed to reveal the true nature of the BNP leader responsible for these charges through their reporting. Additionally, they condemned the attacks on senior photojournalist Azahar Uddin and Bagha Press Club General Secretary Nuruzzaman, calling for his release from the two cases filed against him. They also urged for the withdrawal of false cases against senior journalists Abdus Rouf and Mahmoodul Hasan Nayan in Bogura and other locations.
The human chain saw participation from RUJ Joint Secretary Rimun Rahman, Treasurer Salahuddin, Executive Members Azahar Uddin, Habibur Rahman Pappu, Mehdi Hasan, Mustafiz Rocky, Ali Ehsan Tuhin, Milon Sheikh, Azam Khan, Rozina Sultana Rozi, Afroza Khan, Zahirul Islam, and Bagha Press Club General Secretary Mohammad Nuruzzaman.
