Tangail, Sep 05 (V7N) - The Upazila Executive Officer of Tangail, Hasan Bin Mohammad Ali, has been removed from his position following protests by anti-discrimination students. The controversy arose when a local Union Parishad Chairman, accused in the murder case of student Maruf Hasan, was given a chance to speak at a financial aid event for Maruf’s family.

On Thursday morning, September 5, the incident occurred during an event at the Tangail Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium, where financial assistance was being provided to the family of Maruf Hasan, a student killed during the anti-discrimination movement, and to cover medical costs for those injured. The issue began when Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury Majnu, Chairman of Kartia Union Parishad, was allowed to give a speech at the event.

Students present at the event protested, demanding Majnu’s arrest and criticizing the decision to let him speak in the presence of Maruf’s mother. They also called for the removal of the Upazila Executive Officer. In response, District Commissioner Mohammad Kaisarul Islam attempted to appease the students by requesting them to move to the district commissioner’s office.

Instead, the students staged a sit-in outside the district commissioner’s office. Later, the District Commissioner announced that Hasan Bin Mohammad Ali had been removed from his role and reassigned to the Ministry of Public Administration. The Ministry will determine the next steps regarding his position.

Despite this action, the students continued to demand that Hasan Bin Mohammad Ali personally apologize to Maruf’s mother. Confronted with the students' strong protests, the removed UNO eventually appeared and apologized to Maruf’s family and all those present at the event.
