Mongla, July 10 (V7N) – A cow was killed by a tiger attack in Kochubunia village of Sundarban Union in Mongla upazila. The incident occurred on Thursday when the cow, owned by local resident Nurul Islam Molla, entered the Sundarbans to graze and failed to return.

According to local resident Maruf Babu, the cow had gone into the forest as usual for grazing but did not come back by evening. When the owner searched inside the forest, he found the dead cow with visible bite marks on its neck, indicating a tiger attack. The villagers later helped to retrieve the carcass and bring it back to the locality.

Nurul Islam Molla told reporters, “Our house is adjacent to the Sundarbans, so the cow usually crosses the nearby canal to feed inside the forest. But on Thursday, it did not return, and upon searching, I found it had been killed by a tiger’s bite and claws.”

Md. Obaidul, officer-in-charge of Jiudhara Station under the East Sundarbans Division’s Chandpai Range, said despite repeated warnings from the Forest Department prohibiting locals from grazing cattle inside the Sundarbans, people continue to ignore the rules. He stressed that these incidents will continue unless the community stops letting livestock roam freely into the forest.

The Forest Department has previously urged local residents to keep their cattle restrained and refrain from allowing them to enter the forest for grazing to avoid human-wildlife conflicts.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of coexistence between local communities and wildlife in areas adjacent to the Sundarbans, emphasizing the need for awareness and compliance with forest regulations to prevent future losses.
