Dhaka, Jan 27 (V7N) — Seven government colleges in the capital will no longer remain affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) starting from the 2024-2025 academic session. The decision was announced following an emergency meeting held on Monday between Dhaka University's Vice-Chancellor and the principals of the affiliated colleges.

In a press briefing, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan stated, "An honourable separation of the seven affiliated government colleges has been decided, effective from the upcoming academic year. Admissions to these colleges under Dhaka University will cease from 2024-2025, but the university will continue to oversee the academic programs of currently enrolled students."

Key Decisions Taken:

1. Separation of Colleges: The seven colleges will operate independently, with no further academic ties to DU starting from the next academic session.

2. No New Admissions: Admission to these colleges under DU will be discontinued from the 2024-2025 academic year.

3. Formation of Expert Committee: The Ministry of Education will establish a committee to manage admissions, seat allocations, and other administrative tasks for the colleges.

4. Assurance for Current Students: Dhaka University will ensure that the education of currently enrolled students is not disrupted.

Background of the Conflict

The decision follows escalating tensions between students of the affiliated colleges and Dhaka University. On Sunday, clashes erupted at the Nilkhet intersection, where students from seven colleges faced off with DU students. The situation turned violent, resulting in injuries to at least 44 students.

The clashes were reportedly sparked after representatives of the seven colleges visited DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed to discuss their demands. Allegations of misbehavior by the Pro-VC led to protests, which later escalated into brick-throwing and mutual chases between the two groups.

Police intervened with tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, and four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to restore order.

Students' Demands

The protesting students from the seven colleges have presented a six-point demand, including:

  1. Resignation of DU Pro-VC Dr. Mamun Ahmed.
  2. Withdrawal and investigation of police officers involved in alleged attacks on students.
  3. Justice for alleged harassment of female students by DU students.
  4. Complete administrative separation of the seven colleges from Dhaka University.

Next Steps

While Dhaka University has taken steps to address the academic separation, students from the affiliated colleges continue to demand a comprehensive resolution to the conflict. The Ministry of Education is expected to play a key role in determining the future administrative structure of the colleges
