Dhaka, Mar 16 (V7N) – The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially named the new university comprising seven government colleges in Dhaka as ‘Dhaka Central University’ (DCU).

The decision was finalized during a meeting held at the UGC building in Agargaon on Sunday, presided over by UGC Chairman S.M.A. Faiz and other officials. The move aims to improve the quality of higher education and introduce modern academic methodologies.

The seven government colleges that will form Dhaka Central University are:

  • Dhaka College
  • Eden Women's College
  • Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College
  • Shahid Suhrawardy College
  • Kabi Nazrul Government College
  • Mirpur Bangla College
  • Government Titumir College

These colleges were affiliated with Dhaka University in February 2017 to enhance academic standards. However, students launched long-term protests from October last year, citing irregularities and mismanagement under DU's supervision. In response, the government revoked the affiliation in December 2024 and formed a special committee to oversee the transition process.

After conducting feasibility studies, campus visits, and discussions with students and faculty, the committee recommended the establishment of Dhaka Central University. The UGC had previously sought name suggestions for the proposed university on February 18.

With the decision now finalized, further steps, including administrative structuring and academic planning, will be initiated to ensure a smooth transition for students and faculty members.
