Dhaka, May 29 (V7N) – The Ministry of Education has officially renamed 68 government colleges across 37 districts in Bangladesh, removing the names of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members from nearly all of them. The institutions have now been renamed after their respective local areas.

The decision was confirmed in a notification signed by Md. Mahbub Alam, Deputy Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Department. The announcement, issued on Wednesday (May 28), states that the move was made in accordance with directives from the Cabinet Division’s Cabinet Decision Implementation Monitoring Branch.

According to the notification, all divisional commissioners, education board chairpersons, the Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, and principals of the concerned institutions have been officially informed of the name changes.

Officials say the decision is part of a broader initiative to neutralize political influence in education and ensure public institutions reflect local identities rather than partisan affiliations.

Although no specific names were listed in the announcement, sources indicate that most of the renamed colleges previously carried titles honoring Sheikh Hasina, her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and other members of the family.

This move comes amid growing demands from civil society for depoliticizing public education and aligning institution names with their geographical locations.

The Ministry has not yet announced whether similar measures will be taken regarding other public facilities named after political figures.
