Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N) – Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) staged a protest march Thursday night opposing the seven-point demands raised by diploma engineers.
The procession began from BUET’s Shaheed Minar and ended at TSC Doel Chattar after passing through the Central Shaheed Minar.
At a press conference, BUET students alleged that diploma engineers were attempting to “reintroduce the quota system” in the engineering sector. “Diploma engineers are not professional engineers, and their seven-point demands are unreasonable,” the students stated.
On August 20, polytechnic teachers, students, and diploma engineers formed a human chain at the National Press Club in Dhaka, where they put forward seven demands — including a proposal for 50 percent promotion from deputy assistant engineer to assistant engineer.
BUET students strongly criticized the move, saying such promotions and quota reinstatement would “undermine the quality of education and diminish professional standards in engineering.”
