Chattogram, Aug 31 (V7N) — Violent clashes broke out between students of the Chattogram University and local residents near the university's Gate No. 2 area on Saturday night, following an alleged assault on a female student by a local building security guard. At least 30 people have been injured in the incident, with many suffering wounds from brickbats and a few sustaining machete injuries, according to university medical sources.

The incident reportedly began when a female student from the Department of Philosophy (Session 2024–2025) attempted to enter her rented accommodation near the gate. According to witnesses, an argument ensued when the security guard refused to open the entrance gate, despite the student arriving before the midnight curfew.

The victim alleged that the guard used abusive language and physically assaulted her. “I reached home before midnight and asked him to open the door. When he refused and I called out again, he slapped me, shoved me to the ground, and kicked me. My roommates rushed to help, and nearby locals gathered,” she recounted.

Several students who were informed about the assault rushed to the scene to confront the guard. Eyewitnesses say tensions escalated when the students attempted to detain the accused guard, prompting local residents to intervene and allegedly attack the students. During the ensuing confrontation, both sides engaged in throwing stones and bricks, resulting in multiple injuries.

A student named Al Masnun stated, “The guard attacked the student over a delay of a few minutes. When we went to apprehend him, he tried to flee. We caught him a short distance away, but then local residents attacked us and managed to free him. One of our juniors, Imtiaz from the Law Department, was seriously injured.”

The university’s Proctor, Tanvir Mohammad Haider, confirmed the incident and said, “We have received reports of the clash. Police and campus security personnel have been informed and dispatched to the location.”

Members of the university’s proctorial body arrived at the scene in an attempt to control the situation. As of the latest reports, the injured are receiving treatment at the university medical center. Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests, but an investigation is reportedly underway.

The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of students residing in off-campus housing, particularly female students, and the university administration is expected to convene a meeting to discuss preventive measures.
