Pabna, Sept 12 (V7N) – Jannatul Ferdous Moumita, assistant professor at Jahangirnagar University’s Fine Arts Department, was laid to rest at her family graveyard in Arifpur, Pabna, on Friday night.
Her second funeral prayer was held at 8:30 p.m. at Kacharipara Jame Mosque in Pabna town, after which she was buried at 9:15 p.m. in Arifpur graveyard under Pabna Sadar upazila. Earlier, around 7:40 p.m., an ambulance carrying her body arrived at the family home, where grief-stricken parents, relatives, and neighbors broke down in tears as her remains were placed in front of the mosque.
Family members said Moumita, 30, had registered her marriage earlier this year and her family had hoped to arrange a ceremonial wedding reception soon. That dream was cut short by her sudden death.
Moumita was the only daughter of renowned journalist and former Pabna Press Club president Rumi Khondkar, also a retired associate professor and former Pabna correspondent of The Daily Ittefaq, and former Pabna College associate professor Lutfunnahar Pali.
Born in 1995, she was known as an exceptional student from an early age. She completed her SSC in 2009 from Pabna Government Girls’ School and her HSC in 2011 from Pabna Women’s College, both with Golden GPA-5. She later enrolled at Jahangirnagar University, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts before joining the university as a lecturer in 2021.
Her father recounted the final hours leading up to her passing. On Thursday, after completing her assigned duties in the JUCSU election, she returned home to her faculty quarters around midnight. The following morning, she went to a vote counting center but collapsed at the entrance before entering the room. Despite efforts, she could not be revived.
“Just after polling ended yesterday, I spoke with her, and she seemed very happy about how the election went,” Rumi Khondkar said. “On Friday morning at 8:18 a.m., she sent me a WhatsApp message saying, ‘Baba, I’m going to the vote counting center.’ That was her last message to me.”
Her sudden death has cast a pall of grief across her family, colleagues, and the academic community of Jahangirnagar University.
