Dhaka, Jan 26 (V7N) — Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Executive Member Sarvamitra Chakma has announced his resignation from his post.
He made the announcement through a status on his Facebook page on Monday.
In his post, Sarvamitra Chakma said he was elected by the students of Dhaka University with high expectations. Since assuming office, he claimed to have submitted several proposals to the university administration to ensure campus safety, including introducing registered rickshaws and restricting vehicle movement inside the campus.
Referring to the Central Field, he wrote that there is a lack of basic security measures, including CCTV cameras. He alleged that incidents such as harassment of female students, theft of mobile phones, wallets, and bicycles have taken place there. According to him, female students have complained that outsiders frequently enter the field, harass them, and prevent them from playing.
Sarvamitra also mentioned that a proposal to renovate the wall adjacent to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) was returned by the administration, while outsiders continued to enter the campus by scaling the wall.
Addressing recent criticism, he wrote that incidents of theft and robbery had increased significantly in the previous month. Although he admitted that his approach may have been wrong, he felt that stricter measures were necessary due to administrative stagnation to ensure student security at the Central Field.
He further stated that his actions were solely motivated by concern for campus security and that he had reached out to multiple authorities and attempted to find solutions beyond his assigned responsibilities.
However, he acknowledged that while carrying out these responsibilities, he had gone beyond legal boundaries, which negatively affected his personal life and mental state. As a result, he said he no longer felt capable of continuing in his role.
“I have decided to resign. This decision is not taken out of arrogance or due to instigation by anyone,” he wrote.
Earlier, on Sunday (January 25), a video showing Sarvamitra Chakma forcing around 30 teenagers to sit in a row while holding their ears at the Central Field of Dhaka University went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.
Prior to that incident, he had also faced criticism after another video circulated showing him beating an elderly man with a stick late at night during an operation described as an eviction drive aimed at removing outsiders and sidewalk shops from the campus.
