Dhaka, Feb 09 (V7N)- The gazette of the final ordinance establishing Dhaka Central University, comprising seven government colleges in the capital, has been officially published.
The gazette was uploaded on the website of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs (Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division) at 10:00 am on Monday (February 9).
Earlier, the final draft of the ordinance was approved at the Advisory Council meeting on January 22, according to a press release signed by Khalid Mahmud, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education.
The release stated that the “Dhaka Central University Ordinance, 2026” was approved at a meeting chaired by the Chief Advisor. The primary objective of the ordinance is to improve the quality of higher education by bringing seven government colleges in Dhaka under a unified academic framework and resolving long-standing administrative complications.
According to the notification, Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Government Shahid Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College will operate as affiliated colleges of the new university. The colleges’ individual identities, infrastructure, and rights over movable and immovable properties will remain unchanged.
The ordinance provides for a complete administrative structure, including a Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council. The President of the Republic will serve as the Chancellor, while the Vice-Chancellor will be appointed by the Senate from a panel proposed by the Senate itself. The University Grants Commission (UGC) will have authority to inspect, evaluate, and provide directives regarding education, examinations, research, and administrative activities.
The university will include separate schools for Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Business Studies, Law, and Fine Arts, each headed by a Head of School. Undergraduate and postgraduate education, examinations, and evaluations at the affiliated colleges will follow a uniform academic calendar and evaluation system determined by the university.
Regarding admissions, students will be admitted to the main campus or affiliated colleges based on SSC and HSC results and a central admission test. The ordinance also provides for centralized MPhil and PhD programs, along with opportunities for faculty development and advanced training.
The notification further mentioned special provisions for residential halls, student council elections, and co-curricular activities. It also includes plans for constructing a self-contained permanent campus, with arrangements in place to run academic activities temporarily until the permanent campus is completed.
