Rangamati, Mar 7, (V7N) - Power generation at the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Plant (KAPB) in Kaptai, Rangamati has dropped to its lowest level due to a shortage of water in Kaptai Lake. Out of the five units at the plant, only Unit 4 is currently generating a mere 40 megawatts of electricity.
Although all five units at the Kaptai Hydroelectric Plant are technically operational, only one unit is functioning at the moment, producing just 40 megawatts. Under normal water conditions, the plant is capable of generating 242 megawatts of electricity.
On Thursday, March 6, when contacted, the plant's manager, Engineer ATM Abduzzaher, stated that the water level in Kaptai Lake is steadily decreasing. As a result, the water-dependent plant is now only able to generate power from Unit 4.
He further explained that according to the lake’s rule curve (water measurement standard), the expected water level should be at 92.20 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level). However, the current water level stands at 88.54 feet MSL. Unless there is rainfall soon, if the water level continues to drop, it may become impossible to operate even a single unit.
