BEIJING, March 28, (V7N) – China and Bangladesh have agreed to strengthen their relationship following a landmark meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The high-level discussion, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, saw President Xi personally greeting Prof Yunus—a rare gesture that underscored the importance of the meeting. President Xi reaffirmed China’s full support for Bangladesh’s interim government and its reform agenda.

During the talks, President Xi emphasized China’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation. He announced an extension of zero-tariff facilities for Bangladeshi goods until 2028, two years beyond Bangladesh’s transition from a least developed country. Additionally, he proposed negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Investment Agreement to attract more Chinese investment.

Xi also pledged support for establishing an exclusive Chinese industrial zone and expanding collaboration on Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects, the digital economy, and maritime trade. Furthermore, China offered to build a specialized hospital in Bangladesh and facilitate medical treatment for Bangladeshis in Chinese hospitals.

On regional issues, Prof Yunus sought Beijing’s assistance in resolving the Rohingya crisis, to which Xi reiterated China’s backing for repatriation efforts. The two leaders also discussed Chinese support for Bangladesh’s Teesta River project, military cooperation, and expanded transport connectivity between Kunming and Bangladeshi ports.

Reflecting on the meeting, Bangladesh’s High Representative Dr. Khalilur Rahman described the visit as "transformational," laying the groundwork for decades of strategic cooperation.
