Dhaka, Sep 25 (V7N) – Awami League central leader and former Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday morning from Gulshan, Dhaka. The arrest follows a string of detentions of high-profile political figures in recent weeks.

Nurul Majid, who served as the Minister of Industry for two terms since 2019, was a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s political landscape. He participated in the coup of Humayun 69 and the liberation war, and was an early central leader of the Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League. He has been elected multiple times as a member of parliament from the Narsingdi-4 constituency.

RAB officials confirmed that the arrest was made in connection with an incident that took place on August 4 in the Madhavadi area of Narsingdi, where a crowd of students was reportedly attacked, leading to assault and murder charges being filed against the former minister.

This arrest comes amid escalating political tensions following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, after mass protests and student movements. Sheikh Hasina reportedly left for India following her resignation, sparking a wave of arrests targeting former ministers, state ministers, MPs, and Awami League coalition leaders.

Nurul Majid's arrest adds to the growing list of key figures from the Awami League government being detained in recent weeks, as political instability continues to grip the nation.
