Dhaka, Dec 05 (V7N) — BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed has accused India of suppressing nations aspiring for independence, urging Bangladeshis to prioritize self-reliance in trade and agriculture. He made these remarks during a program titled "Buy Domestic Products, Be Blessed", held in front of the National Press Club on Thursday.
Rizvi Ahmed alleged that India exerts undue influence over neighboring nations, including Bangladesh.
“The entire nation has recognized the provocations of neighboring countries. Though they provoke, the people of Bangladesh have not yielded,” he stated.
He criticized those within the country who allegedly comply with India's interests, claiming:
“Even if some individuals, like Sheikh Hasina, listen to India, the crores of people in Bangladesh will not.”
Addressing the issue of self-reliance, Rizvi Ahmed advocated boycotting Indian products, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Bangladesh’s economy.
“I will respect the Indian flag, but I will boycott their products,” he declared.
He encouraged the cultivation of local produce such as ginger and garlic to reduce dependency on imports and highlighted the declining business in Kolkata’s New Market as a result of fewer Bangladeshi shoppers.
In a symbolic move during his speech, Rizvi Ahmed threw away an Indian saree belonging to his wife, emphasizing the need to reject foreign goods.
Rizvi described the current situation as a "time of national crisis", urging citizens to unite and resist any form of aggression or domination.
“We must stand together and work towards a self-reliant Bangladesh.”
The comments come amid heightened political and economic tensions between Bangladesh and India. Calls for boycotting Indian products have grown following disputes over trade and allegations of undue interference in domestic affairs.
The BNP leader’s speech reflects growing nationalist sentiments and a push for economic independence in response to perceived external pressures.
