Dhaka, Dec 09 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for swift electoral reforms, stating that three to four months are sufficient to implement necessary changes. At a press conference held at the party's Gulshan office on Monday, members of BNP's constitution reform committee criticized the idea of a door-to-door campaign to compile a new voter list, labeling it a waste of time.
The committee emphasized the need for accountability in electoral management. They proposed taking action against those responsible for tarnishing the election process and recommended that such individuals should be barred from participating in future election-related activities. Instead of creating a new voter list, BNP leaders suggested updating the existing one.
During the briefing, the party outlined 17 election-related proposals, which include:
- Amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
- Redrawing electoral boundaries.
- Strengthening the roles and accountability of election officers.
- Defining the authority of the National Identity (NID) system within the Election Commission (EC).
BNP leaders stressed the importance of creating a fair electoral environment to enable citizens who have been unable to vote for years to exercise their democratic rights.
The party's recommendations aim to restore trust in the electoral process, ensuring transparency and inclusivity ahead of future elections.
