Dhaka, Dec 19 (V7N) – The BNP Standing Committee has raised concerns over Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus' Victory Day speech regarding the upcoming elections, terming it unclear and contradictory.
At a press conference held at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan on Thursday morning, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir conveyed the party’s stance on the matter, following a detailed discussion within the party's highest policy-making body.
“The BNP Standing Committee believes the chief adviser’s election speech lacked clarity. While a potential timeframe for the election was hinted at, no specific road map was provided,” Fakhrul said.
He pointed out that Dr Yunus mentioned late 2025 or early 2026 as possible dates for the election. However, the statement lacked specificity. Furthermore, a contradictory remark from the chief adviser's press secretary indicated that the elections could take place by June 2026, which has only deepened confusion, he added.
“The BNP feels such contradictions have created further uncertainty regarding the election process,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The party emphasized the need to expedite the electoral process.
“Since the Election Commission has already been formed, there is no justification for delaying the election. Electoral reforms should be completed swiftly to hold the elections promptly,” he said.
The meeting also suggested that the exact timeline for elections should be determined through consultation with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and inclusivity.
