Dhaka, Dec 29 (V7N) — BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has criticised the recent student movements and emphasised the importance of protecting the constitution and conducting free and fair elections. Speaking at a view-sharing meeting organised by the newly elected convening committee of Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP, Abbas addressed various issues, including political reforms, governance, and electoral rights.
Abbas expressed disappointment with student leaders claiming sole credit for the July-August movement. “It hurts when they talk about burying the constitution written on the blood of martyrs. The constitution is not a rough leaf that we can throw away at will,” he said, adding that such remarks align with fascist ideologies.
Referring to the country’s independence in 1971, Abbas questioned the rhetoric of some movements, saying, “What did we achieve when we gained independence? One side says we made a mistake by separating from Pakistan. We are supporters of the blood of 1971.”
Abbas also criticised the current calls for reforms, suggesting they lack substance. “I will only reform, I am going to beat a drum, I don’t see anything,” he said. He pointed out that while there is freedom of the press, journalists do not enjoy real freedom.
He accused the government of fostering corruption and questioned whether reforms could be achieved under the current administration. “A corrupt secretary has been appointed to the secretariat. Will you make reforms while keeping corrupt people? Are you trying to bring back the Awami League again?” he asked.
Mirza Abbas reiterated the BNP’s demand for fair elections, stating, “BNP never thinks it will come to power. BNP wants elections. It wants the right to vote.” He warned against political arrogance, saying, “If someone thinks that the whole of Bangladesh is on their side, so they can do whatever they want, that will not be good.”
Abbas raised concerns about recent incidents, including fires in the secretariat and an Ansar rebellion, alleging they were instigated by individuals within the government. “The Ansar rebellion and the fire are not happening just like that. Someone or the other is instigating it. They are sitting in the secretariat, working as assistants to the advisors,” he claimed.
The BNP leader concluded by urging all political parties to work together for stability and democratic rights, ensuring the country’s governance is transparent and accountable.
