Dhaka, Jan 14 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has proposed that national elections could be held in July or August this year. He made this statement during a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Wednesday.
“There is no need to prolong the elections. With the Election Commission formed and the reform report ready for submission, the BNP believes it is feasible to conduct the elections by mid-year,” said Fakhrul.
Addressing the idea of holding elections other than the national parliamentary polls, Fakhrul dismissed the notion, stating, “The Election Commission itself has clarified that national and local elections cannot be held simultaneously.”
On the issue of trying fascism, Fakhrul remarked, “The process must not be rushed, as hasty trials may raise questions about their credibility.”
Regarding the proposed mass uprising in July, Fakhrul said, “We have received a draft proposal from the government’s advisor, Mahfuz Alam. Discussions are ongoing, and we will seek advice from constitutional experts before finalising our stance.”
Highlighting BNP’s history, Fakhrul noted, “BNP was born through reforms, and Ziaur Rahman reinstated multi-party democracy. Reform is a continuous process, and it will remain so.”
The BNP Secretary General also emphasised transparency in international agreements, stating that all treaties with India should be made public.
Dr Abdul Moin Khan, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, was also present at the press conference.
