Dhaka, Apr 10 (V7N) – In a significant political move, the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh has proposed a name change for the country from "People's Republic of Bangladesh" to "Bangladesh Public Welfare State". The proposal was submitted today at noon by a six-member delegation of the party to the National Consensus Commission at the National Parliament building.

The head of the Consensus Commission, Ali Riaz, received the proposal, which is rooted in the party’s belief that the country’s name should reflect its core philosophy of ensuring the welfare of the people.

In their written opinion, the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh emphasized that renaming the country would better symbolize the government’s commitment to the welfare of the citizens, aligning the nation’s identity with the values of social justice and public service.

“The name should reflect a state that prioritizes the welfare of its people, ensuring accountability and integrity,” said Ashraf Ali Akon, a presidium member of the party.

Along with the name change, the delegation submitted four additional proposals related to integrity, accountability, and electoral reforms. One of the more controversial proposals calls for the establishment of Sharia law to prevent corruption and address misrule in the country.

“We believe that Sharia law can play a key role in addressing the moral and ethical concerns in governance,” Akon added, noting that BNP (Bangladesh National Party) has also expressed agreement with the concept of Sharia law.

The proposals have sparked a significant political discourse as they touch upon sensitive topics related to governance, religion, and national identity. The delegation was led by Ashraf Ali Akon and included Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, Engineer Ashraful Alam, and Maulana Ahmed Abdul Qayyum, among others.

As discussions around these proposals continue, they are likely to influence ongoing debates about the country’s future direction, with significant implications for both religious and political landscapes in Bangladesh.
