Dhaka, May 07 (V7N) – Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has warned that Bangladesh may once again face dire consequences if democracy is not restored in the country. He made the remarks on Wednesday morning during a civic rally organized in front of the National Press Club, calling for the announcement of a roadmap for early elections.
“There is no alternative to democracy,” Dudu stated. “If a democratic path is not adopted, we may have to face the same kind of consequences we experienced in the past.”
He stressed that all political crises could be resolved “overnight” if the government were to announce a credible election roadmap aligned with democratic values.
The senior BNP leader also reminded the public of the sacrifices made by party members in what he described as an anti-fascist movement against authoritarianism. He accused the current government of showing disrespect toward democratic principles by ignoring such sacrifices.
“If the government still refuses to understand the people's demand for democracy, then it clearly shows they do not value democracy at all,” he concluded.
The BNP and other opposition parties have long been demanding a free, fair, and participatory national election under a neutral caretaker administration—something the ruling party has consistently rejected.
