Dhaka, Feb 7 (V7N) — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has extended a public invitation to BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman to participate in a face-to-face debate on a public platform, where both leaders would present their respective political manifestos before the nation.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman made the call through a Facebook post on Friday, saying that since Tarique Rahman has already announced his political plans, it would be appropriate to place those plans before the people through an open and transparent debate.
In the post, the Jamaat chief said that no political process can gain legitimacy without free and fair elections, adding that election outcomes lacking justice and public trust cannot command national confidence.
He stressed that following the July uprising, political leadership has a moral responsibility to present politics to the younger generation as civilized, responsible, and free from conflict. According to him, restoring faith in politics requires a shift toward ethical conduct and constructive engagement.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman further said that accountability of political leadership must be ensured through direct public and media scrutiny. He argued that the future standard of governance in Bangladesh should be built on openness to criticism, transparency, and responsibility.
Calling for a new political beginning, he said Bangladesh needs to move forward with a firm commitment to respecting the people’s mandate and allowing citizens to be the final arbiters of political direction.
As of the filing of this report, no official response has been received from the BNP regarding the debate invitation.
