Habiganj, Feb 07 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday alleged that politics in the country has been turned into a profession rather than a duty, leading to corruption, extortion and looting.
He made the remarks while addressing an election rally at New Field in Habiganj.
“Those who take politics as a profession are the ones involved in corruption, extortion, litigation and plundering public wealth,” the Jamaat Ameer said, adding that such practices have even undermined the dignity and security of women in society.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that if Jamaat-e-Islami comes to power, party MPs will not take tax-free vehicles and will avoid luxury unless absolutely necessary. “They will not accept flats allocated to MPs at subsidized prices. Those who can afford cars or flats will buy them with their own money,” he said.
He further stated that the income and expenditure statements of elected representatives and their family members will be made public, warning that no one would be spared if found misappropriating public funds.
Claiming that corruption and extortion have become widespread, he said Jamaat would ensure strict accountability. He also warned against any form of harassment of women, saying such acts would no longer be tolerated.
The Jamaat Ameer blamed previous rulers for what he described as a culture of terrorism and corruption, alleging that promises made during elections are often forgotten once power is secured.
Referring to the condition of tea garden workers, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said they live in inhumane conditions, with their children deprived of education and healthcare. He pledged to modernize tea gardens, introduce technology, and improve the quality of life of workers, assuring that no child would be deprived of education.
He also emphasized communal harmony, saying Bangladesh has long been home to people of four religions—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. “This country is like a flower garden. Islam forbids oppression based on religion, and no truly religious person can harm followers of other faiths,” he said.
