Dhaka, Feb 09 (V7N)- A High Court writ petition has been filed seeking suspension of the candidacy of Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and the 11-party alliance candidate for Dhaka-11, on charges of holding dual citizenship.
The writ was submitted on Monday (February 9) by Shamim Ahmed, the Jatiya Party candidate for the same constituency. It alleges that Nahid Islam obtained Dominica citizenship on April 20, 2025. The Election Commission Secretary and the Returning Officer have also been named as respondents.
Earlier, Nahid Islam had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to cancel the candidacy of BNP nominee MA Qayyum in Dhaka-11. After the High Court rejected that petition, Nahid Islam appealed to the Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division.
Dhaka-11 constituency comprises wards 21, 22, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 of Dhaka North City Corporation and ward 23 of Sabujbagh. The constituency has 439,078 registered voters, including 222,877 men, 216,198 women, and 3 voters of the third gender.
