Panchagarh, Feb 13 (V7N) — A tightly contested race in the Panchagarh-1 constituency of the 13th National Parliament election ended with victory for BNP candidate Barrister Naushad Zamir, who defeated National Citizens Party (NCP) leader Sarjis Alam by a margin of 8,120 votes.
Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Kazi Md. Sayemuzzaman officially announced the results at around 1:30 am Thursday.
According to the final tally, Naushad Zamir, contesting with the paddy sheaf symbol, secured 176,169 votes, while his nearest rival Sarjis Alam, the Shapla-Kali symbol candidate, received 168,049 votes.
The constituency has a total of 458,807 registered voters, of whom 322,307 cast their ballots. The number of valid votes stood at 315,149, resulting in a voter turnout of 77.19 percent.
Voting was held in 155 polling centers from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on February 12. After the completion of vote counting at the centers, the final results were declared.
Sarjis Alam contested the election as the chief organizer of the NCP’s northern region and the nominated candidate of the 11-party United Bangladesh Alliance.
