Dhaka, June 24 (V7N) - BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is scheduled for medical tests today, a day after undergoing a procedure to implant a permanent pacemaker in her chest at Evercare Hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU) in Dhaka. Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, her personal physician, confirmed this development.

Since the pacemaker's installation on Sunday evening, Khaleda Zia has been under strict isolation and close observation at the hospital. Dr. Zahid mentioned, "She will undergo a series of tests today to monitor her condition closely."

A member of the BNP's medical board, preferring anonymity, indicated that Khaleda Zia's condition has been stable post-procedure, with no adverse changes noted.

"We are awaiting the results of today's tests to assess her overall health and decide on further treatment," the medical board member explained.

The pacemaker implantation was necessary to address Khaleda Zia's heart issues. A team of specialist doctors successfully performed the procedure at Evercare Hospital.

Dr. Zahid, who is also a BNP vice chairman, disclosed that Khaleda had previously faced heart complications involving three blockages.

"After thorough evaluation, the medical board opted for the pacemaker implantation," Dr. Zahid clarified.

Earlier on June 11, 2022, Khaleda Zia was diagnosed with multiple heart blockages at Evercare Hospital, with one blockage requiring immediate stent placement due to being 95% blocked.

A pacemaker is a small electronic device implanted in the chest to regulate heartbeats, essential when the heart's natural electrical system is impaired, leading to irregular heart rhythms.

Khaleda Zia was rushed to Evercare Hospital early Saturday morning after experiencing sudden illness at her residence, 'Firoza' in Gulshan. She was admitted directly to the CCU for immediate medical intervention.

The 79-year-old former prime minister has been grappling with various health issues, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and multiple organ-related concerns.
