Dhaka, August 20 (V7N) – Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's bank accounts have been reactivated after 17 years. The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a directive to Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Monday to lift the freeze on her accounts.
Sources from the NBR and BB confirmed that the decision to unfreeze Khaleda Zia’s accounts was made by the newly appointed NBR Chairman, Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, following consultations with Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Khaleda Zia's accounts were initially frozen by the caretaker government in 2007. Although she was later permitted to withdraw a limited amount from Rupali Bank’s Shaheed Moinul Road branch in Dhaka Cantonment, the freeze remained in place. The monthly withdrawal limit initially set at Tk 2.0 lakh was gradually increased over time.
It is noteworthy that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's bank accounts were also seized by the caretaker government in 2007. Following her election victory and subsequent return to office, her accounts were restored.
