"The army being given magistracy powers is worrying. It signals that the administration is unable to maintain law and order, and it suggests other institutions aren't functioning as they should," Fakhrul said.
He added that the army should only be granted such powers in areas that have become uncontrollable, but in peaceful regions where political leadership is managing effectively, such authority could lead to further complications.
Fakhrul encouraged the interim government to reconsider this move, warning that it could backfire and harm the country’s political stability. He also expressed hope that the interim government will work to eliminate obstacles and create an environment for a fair and inclusive democratic election.
At the event, Fakhrul also met with families of those killed and injured in Thakurgaon during the student-led anti-discrimination movement and provided them with financial assistance.
The BNP leader emphasized the need for a genuine democratic election, asserting that democracy requires an elected government and a functioning parliament. He further called for politicians to be allowed to fulfil their duties, believing this to be the solution to the country’s political problems.
Fakhrul also spoke emotionally about the victims of the student-led movement against the Sheikh Hasina regime, noting the human costs of the past 15-16 years under her government.
