Bhasanchar, Oct 15 (V7N) — In a bid to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for Rohingya refugees, Qatar Charity (QC) has recently distributed cooking gas cylinders on Bhasanchar Island. This initiative benefits approximately 22,800 refugees, helping them transition from firewood-based cooking to safer and more sustainable methods.
The relief project aims to reduce reliance on firewood, which posed environmental and safety risks. Refugees previously had to gather firewood, leading to deforestation and endangering their well-being. By providing cooking gas, QC promotes healthier cooking practices and contributes to forest conservation efforts around the island.
Samiya, a refugee mother of three, expressed her relief at the change. “Before, cooking was very challenging. Collecting firewood was dangerous and took a lot of time,” she said. “Now, I can cook safely and quickly for my children. We no longer need to harm the forest, and I hope this support continues for as long as we are here.”
Hossain Ahmed, a 39-year-old refugee, highlighted the positive impact on daily life. “With cooking gas, we can prepare a variety of meals, which brings joy to our routine,” he shared. “This assistance from Qatar Charity gives us hope and helps us feel more at home in this new environment.”
Elderly refugee Shabika Begum also expressed her gratitude. “With gas cylinders, I feel secure and can focus on my health. We no longer have to search for firewood in the forest. Cooking is now easy and safe.”
Government officials lauded QC’s efforts. Md Maksudur Rahman, Assistant Camp-in-Charge of Bhasanchar Island, acknowledged the significance of the initiative. “Qatar Charity’s provision of cooking gas cylinders meets an urgent need, enhances safety, and improves daily life for the refugee community,” Rahman said. He further commended QC's long-term commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, noting that their contributions complement government efforts in humanitarian assistance.
Over the past five years, Qatar Charity has supported more than 1.5 million Rohingya refugees across Cox’s Bazar and Bhasanchar through various initiatives. The introduction of cooking gas cylinders reflects their continued dedication to promoting health, safety, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
This project not only alleviates the daily struggles of refugees but also underscores Qatar Charity’s role in fostering resilience and normalcy for displaced communities.
