Dhaka, Oct 30 (V7N)- Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Adviser Hassan Ariff proposed that the governance tenure in Bangladesh be reduced to four years, contrary to the current constitutional provision of five years. He stated, "If a major global power like the United States can operate with a four-year term, there should be no issue with implementing a similar term in Bangladesh. This is my personal opinion."
Ariff made these remarks during a views-exchange meeting with the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat Media Centre, where he was the chief guest on Wednesday. He noted that the term for Union Parishads was previously set at three years before being extended to five, yet he asserted that this two-year increase has not yielded any significant benefits and has never been evaluated. "I believe the term for elected chairmen and members should revert to three years," he added.
He further elaborated that with a three-year term, five elected representatives could serve over a span of 15 years, allowing a larger pool of public representatives the chance to contribute to governance.
When asked about the removal of Union Parishad chairmen and members, Ariff indicated that no decisions have been made on that front.
The meeting was chaired by BSRF president Fosih Uddin Mahtab and moderated by BSRF general secretary Masudul Haque.
